New York Magazine runs
an interesting piece about the evolutions and trends of the t-shirt industry.
Quote: “The greatest breakthrough of the last decade was when American Apparel, under the direction of its free-loving founder Dov Charney, turned the fit of a T-shirt into a message. Never mind the graphics or slogans. The message was you—your body thrust out there into the world, shrink-wrapped in every conceivable color. American Apparel remains powerful and ubiquitous in the T-shirt world, but the
trends have gotten subtler and more introverted. In the same way that various art movements become hermetic and end up addressing the nature of art itself, today’s cutting-edge T-shirt is all about the T-shirt.”

I’ve recently had the chance to get acquainted with a new comer to the T-shirt block,
Collect London. Despite being relatively new, Collect London already offers an extensive collection of T-shirts – from plain, to patterned and printed Tees. It seems that beautiful designs and their actual transformation into wearable art comes easily to Collect –The designs range on serious, possibly over-ambitious topics. From the state of hip hop in
“Harlem” by Louisa Todd (but giving it much more than the cliché treatment I expected) to, domestic abuse in Russia in
“Rag Doll”. The texts backing up the shirts are generally on a bleak tone, but the shirts themselves border on aesthetic brilliance, regardless of their message, and will command the attention of any viewer by being engaging and acute.
So let’s be clear: they’ve got a new fan.
Three of my favorite shirts:

As can be seen, the designs are offered on a wide variety of shirts – Relaxed fit, regular fit, slim fit and so on.

Lately, I’ve been lurking at a bit at
Finroo and stumbled across
John Fitzpatrick’s T-shirt Designs, which I want to share with you. As a designer, Fitzpatrick has that single inestimable virtue: having seen a design of him once, you admit to yourself, almost with a sigh, that you will have to peep everything that he designed. At a time that t-shirt design has been a slogan war, Fitzpatrick reminds you that a designer can, in its junior way, produce something of a work of art, or at least a worthy vehicle for the play of ideas, feeling, aesthetics and wits.
Here are some of his T-shirts:

Design by Humans has a long history of well crafted t-shirts designs, accompanied by a super suburbanite with urban sensibilities chic. But for me,
DBH’s accomplishment has been the fact that they are one of the selected few t-shirt shops who are successful in making wearable full shirt print. They share that honor with beautiful decay and a couple of slipped-my-mind shirt stores.
Oh, and their female models have been tremendous. They have perfected the “I Aspire to major in pencil sharpener repair” look. Can’t really comment on their male counterparts, but the guy in the third picture below is hilarious – Hurray to auto-erotic-asphyxiation-by-way-of-preshrunken-ironic-couture!

Rahzo are just starting up, but are already showing hints of great t-shirt design – meticulous layouts, with a hint of art-school influence, while using the medium to share ideas and promote urgent issues.
The Rahzo concept is to establish a community which creates and shares designs, while a share of their earning goes towards non-profit organization.
I love the idea, the interface and the design – the holy trinity as far as I’m concerned. Haven’t ordered anything yet, but I’m guessing that will follow along.
8 on the Shirtlog scale, since the selection is still limited, but as soon as the site has more to offer, that’ll go up.
Plus, if you decide to order now, you can use their promo coupon which will take 25% off your order, limited to one order (any number of garments).
